Maintaining Mobility
Posted by Deb Spinelli on April 20, 2020
Continuing mobility is very important to help older people maintain meaningful participation in social and physical activities as they age. Mobility is crucial to active aging and continued mobility enables the elderly to experience positive quality of life and better overall health.

Broadly defined, mobility is the ability to move oneself. This can refer to walking, using available transportation such as buses or shuttles, or employing assistive devices like walkers and canes. Impaired mobility can greatly limit a person's access to the outside world.

A multitude of factors affect mobility in older adults. Mobility decline may be due to muscle pain and/or muscle strength. It can also result from injuries. Falling, for example, which is a common occurrence among the elderly, can lead to injuries that can have long-term consequences for mobility. Some prescription medications can cause dizziness that can adversely affect mobility.

Even if you or a loved one suffer from decreased mobility, however, there are solutions to maintain mobility despite physical limitations. Walkers first began to appear in the early 1950s. Since then, these devices have come a long way. In the 1970s, a wheeled version was introduced. Referred to as a "Rollator," this device consists of a frame with three or four large wheels, handlebars, and a built-in seat. More sophisticated than a traditional walker, some rollators even come with a shopping basket.

The Lumex Walkabout Lite Four-Wheel Rotator from The Medical Maven is a great option for someone with decreased mobility wishes wants to remain as active as possible. The Walkabout Rollator is a comfortable, lightweight, and affordable solution to mobility issues. The lightweight aluminum frame can hold up to 300 pounds, but the unit itself weighs just 14.5 pounds. The Walkabout folds into a compact unit quickly and easily, which allows for ease of storage and transport. The Walkabout's ergonomic hand grips and easy-lock, quick-stop breaks ensure the user's safety while the padded seat and adjustable-height handle ensure comfort.

Statement: Continued mobility allows older people to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.
